About MLD - Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Manual lymphatic drainage is a type of manual manipulation of the skin, not to be confused with massage, based on the hypothesis that it will encourage the natural drainage of the lymph, which carries waste products away from the tissues back toward the heart.

The health benefits to MLD are astounding.

The Lymphatic system is part of our immune system.  It keeps body fluid levels in balance and defends the body against infections. Lymphatic (lim-FAT-ik) vessels, tissues, organs, and glands work together to drain a watery fluid called lymph from throughout the body.

Why MLD?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage imporoves the flow of lymph.  Massaging areas without swelling, makes space for clean fluid from congested areas to keep fluids moving.  Doctors are reffering their patients to have MLD to treat many differernt conditions and diseases.

Pre and Post Cosmetic Surgery

Swelling, bruising, and discomfort usually follow any type of cosmetic procedure or plastic surgery. While these side effects are a normal part of the healing process, they often disrupt the lymphatic system and lead to secondary complications. Secondary complications may include excessive swelling, persistent pain, a look and feeling of puffiness, hardened lumps/bumps, and thickened skin (known as fibrosis).   MLD reduces the risk of complications, shortens post-surgical healing time.

Eases Tension in the Body

Some of the benefits of lymphatic drainage massage include reduced swelling and inflammation, enhanced immune system function and relaxation and stress relief.  When the body is functioning as it should the body is able to deal with external stresses and worries.

Lymphadema

The aim of MLD is to move fluid from the swollen area into a place where the lymphatic system is working normally.  It can help move trapped fluid when you have lymphedema. Your therapist may use manual lymph drainage along with other techniques, including: Exercises. Compression bandages, sleeves, or stockings.

The Lymphatic system  plays a major roll in the circulation of hormones.  MLD can stimulate a more effective and predictable delivery of the reproductive and fertility hormones throughout the body.

Autoimmune Disease

Manual lymphatic drainage may improve lymphatic function to reduce tissue inflammation in autoimmune diseases. It may also regulate your immune system to reduce the severity of autoimmune responses.  Studies show that the disfunction in the lymphatic system can increase the symptoms of Scleroderma, Lupus, and Rheumatoid Arthritis.  When the lymphatic system is functioning properly, the symptoms of these conditions can be eased.
