One of the most common questions I get from new clients is:
"What’s the difference between a Swedish massage and a deep tissue massage?”
It’s a great question—and an important one. Both styles are therapeutic and relaxing, but they serve different purposes. If you’ve ever been unsure which one to book, here’s what you need to know.
🌿 Swedish Massage: Think Soothing, Gentle, and Restorative
Swedish massage is the classic relaxation massage most people think of when they picture a spa experience. It uses long, flowing strokes, gentle kneading, and light-to-moderate pressure to help you unwind.
It’s perfect if:
You’re feeling stressed or anxious
You want to boost circulation and support immune function
You’re new to massage and want to ease into bodywork
You’re looking for a calming, full-body reset
A Swedish massage isn’t about “fixing” one specific area. It’s about whole-body relaxation—coaxing your nervous system out of fight-or-flight and into a state of healing.
💪 Deep Tissue Massage: Targeted, Intentional, and Releasing
Deep tissue massage focuses on relieving chronic tension and breaking up adhesions (aka “knots”) in deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. It uses slower strokes and more pressure—but it’s not about causing pain. It’s about working with your body to release what’s stuck.
It’s great for:
Chronic tightness in the neck, shoulders, or lower back
Recovery from repetitive strain (like desk work or heavy lifting)
Athletes or active individuals with overworked muscles
People who know where they carry their tension and want focused relief
Keep in mind: deep tissue doesn’t mean “hard pressure everywhere.” It’s strategic and focused, and I always work within your comfort level.
So, Which One Should You Book?
Here’s how I usually explain it:
If your goal is to relax, reset, and breathe deeply—start with Swedish.
If you’re dealing with tension that just won’t quit, deep tissue might be more effective.
And if you're still not sure? Don’t worry. We’ll talk before your session so I can tailor the massage to your exact needs. I often blend techniques to give you the best of both worlds.
Your Body, Your Massage
No two bodies are alike—and no two massage sessions should be either. Whether you’re looking to relax or release, I’ll meet you exactly where you are.
